I plan on integrating more video posts, including how-to vids and other videos to help you get the most out of your fat loss and physique transformation programs.

I’m 100% over salmonella and I feel SO good!

How much time do you have?

February 2nd, 2009

Hey San Antonio,

Don’t have time to exercise, lose weight, and change your body? Just curious:

-How much tv do you watch in a night?

-How much time do you spend on the phone in a day?

-How often do you go out to eat? How long are you in the restaurant?

-How much time do you spend driving to and from work each day? If you started your day an hour earlier, would you save over an hour in traffic each day?

-What do you do all weekend?

-How many nights a week do you go out?

-Do you play video games?

-How many hours per week do you spend emailing? Social networking sites?

Bottom line: if you want to change your body, you can do it. It may take an overhaul of your life – you may have to go through each and everything you do and steal 10 minutes here or 20 minutes there by finding ways to do things more efficiently. It takes NO MORE THAN 4 HOURS PER WEEK. If you don’t have that time now, you can make it.

Live longer. Live better. Become more productive. Lose fat. Gain confidence. Gain energy. Be a role model.

So many people spend all of their time worrying about a diet pill or a short cut or some other bs workout program that’s advertised on tv. It takes work. It takes effort. It takes consistency.

Stop putting it off! If you want change, it is yours – take it!

The Importance of the “High Point”

February 2nd, 2009

Hi San Antonio,

We all have points in our lives that we look back on and draw inspiration from. I feel that I’ve had a decent run here on this planet, and have while my life hasn’t always been rosey, it has been filled with exciting moments: the birth of my son (far away the greatest day of my life, I delivered him), receiving the USAF Airman’s Medal from congress, finishing college (a few times), and opening my business are times that I reflect on and remember how I felt on those days when things aren’t going so well or when I need a little extra pick me up.

Fitness is no different – everyone goes through low times when they can’t muster up motivation, get discouraged, and just don’t want to do cardio, lift or eat another chicken breast (most people know that I personally hate chicken). You have to find things that make you remember that the commitment is worth it. Of course, we all know the benefits of exercise and that you’ll not only live longer (if your personal trainer doesn’t kill you in the process) but you’ll also live better. All of that goes without saying. Most of the time, the biggest problems are the smallest things – doing today’s workout, eating the next healthy meal, skipping a night out drinking. We’ve all faced these challenges.

A point in my “fitness” life that sticks out happened about 9 years ago – I was keeping my dietary discipline, but I had gone through a phase of trying to gain muscle and had been eating a bit looser than is required to stay lean, and had been back on the really clean eating wagon for only a few weeks. My office had just celebrated a quarter like no other – 15-20 hour days had paid off and we were able to reach an impossible goal. To celebrate, our manager was going to take us out to one of the most amazing pizza places I had ever eaten at – pizza and beer would all be on her tab… Problem was that I had committed to myself that I wasn’t going to break my diet. Saturday was my cheat day, and this was Monday, and I fully intended on working out after the luncheon. I had to be prepared. I knew there was a salad bar, so I brought a packet of tuna along with me and mixed my own tuna salad: eggs, lettuce and tuna!

During the luncheon, I was, well, crucified! People taunted me, reminding me how amazing the pizza was. Our boss reminded me that he had the tab, and I should order whatever I wanted. My co-workers had their families with them and more than one person asked me “are you on a diet?” and made comments that I was “already skinny”.

I don’t use the term diet because I don’t diet. I eat. It’s my lifestyle. So, I just basically smiled and said “Nah, I just don’t want pizza.” Trust me, it wasn’t easy. On the way out of the pizza place, a co-worker that I hadn’t spoken a whole lot to in the past stopped me and told me “I’m really impressed by your discipline. I wish I could do that.” That still rings in my head today and it still motivates me.

I know that people are watching me. I realize that my friends look to me for motivation when it comes to helping them. If they see me order a cheeseburger, then it must be alright, yeah? I like that responsibility. I like the expectations. I like being at dinner and running into a client and seeing how they look at my plate. I simply practice what I preach!

A few years ago, I had a friend that was working out as hard and was as motivated as anyone I had ever seen. He was beginning from scratch, but I felt like he was making amazing progress, and he was logging it on an internet message board. In confidence, he told me that he was getting discouraged. Yes, he could see progress and was feeling better, but felt like it wasn’t fast enough. That’s when I gave him this simple advice:

“You may not be exactly where you want to be yet, but there is someone watching you that wants to be where you are now…”

Remember that – lead by example!

No More Excuses…

February 1st, 2009

Hey San Antonio,

Today is the last real “holiday” of the holiday season – Super Bowl Sunday. A lot of people are able to convince themselves that the holidays aren’t a good time to get their fitness program up and running because all of the distractions. And then the New Year comes and they decide “well, the Super Bowl will be here in a few weeks, so why start now?” Of course, we have the San Antonio Stock Show and Rodeo starting this week, so there’s another built in excuses.

There are 2 types of people in this world: those who let their bodies control them and those who control their bodies. The first types are easy to spot: usually have a gut, get tired easy, succumb to lazy activities like happy hour 4-5 nights per week, shy away from anything physical or anything remotely healthy and usually have a negative comment geared toward anyone that mentions working out, eating healthy or anything else similar. I think most people fall into this – mysa.com reported yesterday that there was an “alarming increase in obesity in Bexar County in 2008″ – ALARMING? Hardly.

The latter, people that control their bodies are also easy to spot. The mind and body are the hardest things to control, and it seems that their discipline spills over into other parts of their life. They get more done in less time. They’re awake and alert. They’re active. When someone makes a comment about “I’d rather LIVE my life and eat what I want” they smile and don’t say a word… Oh yeah, they don’t get nervous about pool parties, weekends at the lake, tube trips down the Guadalupe or Comal, or company picnics where shorts are going to be worn (who wants to hide behind pants in 100 degree South Texas weather in the dead of summer?)

Whether you are in control or controlled is completely up to you. The change doesn’t happen over night and is not easy. It takes the determination and willpower to say “I’m going to do this no matter what it takes”. You’ll find out a lot about yourself, and there will be challenges, hardships and you will take the occasional step back. But don’t keep going back – focus on forward progress each and every day. Then in a few weeks, you’ll look back on your journey and be shocked at how far you’ve come.

April 1 will be here in 8 weeks… Memorial Day in about 15 – that’s the official start of summer. There isn’t a person on earth that can’t drastically change their body in 15 weeks. Don’t put it off.

Easy Meals – San Antonio Personal Trainer Boyd Myers Shares Simple, Healthy Recipes

January 27th, 2009

Hey San Antonio,

One of the most common questions I get about nutrition is “What on earth do I eat?” While I try to be as flexible as possible with clients, giving them a simple food list isn’t always the best way to go if they aren’t experienced with creating healthy meals in the kitchen. So I’ve decided to share some of my favorite meals/snacks that I’ve eaten for years gathered from friends, books (Eating For Life by Bill Phillips is loaded with great recipes), and just trial and error.

Remember, when I say 5-7 meals per day, that includes snacks. To me, a meal is whatever you eat. I gave up breakfast, lunch and dinner many years ago. To me, it’s meal 1, meal 2, so on and so forth. I don’t mind eating eggs at 8pm or lean steak and a sweet potato at 6am. Variety is the key!

Gladware + sandwich bags + a small cooler lunch box is your best friend when you’re eating healthy! LOL – I’m a social person and I love spending time with friends. I don’t let “my lifestyle” get in the way of that. If they’re going somewhere that I can’t eat, I’ll bake 2 chicken breasts and put them in a sandwich bag and carry them with me. I’m not joking! Most people don’t have to be that hardcore, but hey, where there’s a will, there’s a set of 6 pack abs.

Breakfast Taco (no kidding)
Whole Grain tortillas
4 egg whites and 1 egg yolk, beaten, mixed with
a splash of skim milk or water and a
dash of McCormick “Santa Fe” Spice Blend
2 Tbsp diced red and/or green bell peppers
1/4 cup, scant sliced scallions
1/4 cup diced lean ham
1/4 cup sliced baby mushrooms, white or Portabella
2-3 grape tomatoes, halved
cilantro, fresh or dried, to taste
2 Tbsp Fat Free “Tomato’n Basil” Feta Cheese
Hot Salsa for topping

Cheesecake Snack (WHAAAAAT?)
1 tub of fat free cottage cheese
10 strawberries (or an equivalent amount of blueberries)
8-10 packets of Splenda
Blend to puree, refrigerate for 1-2 hours
Eat… Have a sweet tooth? Perfect for you…

Pita Snack
I found this one on the web a while ago, and while I swear I’m not a big cottage cheese fan, I love this because cottage cheese is an amazing source of amino acids. If you’re on the run, keep the pita seperate until you’re ready to eat it.
Mix one serving of cottage cheese with a small portion of garbanzo beans. Add red wine vinegar to taste. Serve inside a whole wheat pita and garnish with fresh spinach leaves and sprouts. Now you have a quick, delicious, complete meal.

Pumped Up Chicken Salad
I think this one came from Eating For Life – but it is one of my staples… 4 servings!
3 cups diced cooked chicken (4 portion sized breasts)
1 cup chopped celery
1 small apple, chopped
2 Tablespoons chopped onion
1/2 cup low-fat cottage cheese
1 teaspoon skim milk
1 handful red seedless grapes, quartered
pepper

Mix chicken, celery, apple, grapes, and onion in large mixing bowl. In a blender mix cottage cheese and skim milk. Blend for 2 minutes on the “whip” speed. Add to chicken mixture. Pepper to taste. Serve on lettuce or in a whole wheat sandwich.
makes 4 servings

Tasty Chicken Recipe
(This one was listed on a message board that I visit regularly. Excellent recipe.)
Cut up 1 chicken breast into strips. In a bowl put 1 teaspoon of black pepper, 1 teaspoon of paprika, dash of salt (if desired) and 1 Tablespoon of lemon juice. Mix the chicken with the other ingredients in a bowl until the chicken is coated. Cook the chicken in your wok (or skillet) until it turns golden brown. Spray a little olive oil on your wok to keep the chicken from sticking. Stir it some, but mostly let it sit and cook until the skin turns brown. Eat in salad, by itself, or mix with vegetable/wheat pasta. Dont forget your 2 glasses of water! Enjoy!

Patty Melts
Ahhhh, one of my faves.
I simply soak the leanest ground hamburger (or ostrich, or turkey) meat I can find in worcestire (spelling?) sauce, cook on the Foreman with grilled onions, add fat free sharp cheddar, whole grain toast and I can’t even tell the difference in this and the ones my mother made us…

My Breakfast + Pre-workout drink…
I’m I’m working out after breakfast, it is time for the highest caloric intake of the day, but I don’t want just any calories. I want sustained energy from carbs and sustained amino acid release from protein.
2 scoops of vanilla (or banana) High 5 Protein Powder
1/2 cup of oatmeal (not cooked)
1/2 banana
ice
water
blend until smooth

Note: I also have a very similar breakfast on non-workout days. My mornings are usually rushed and this is easy to blend, put in a drink bottle and go. Of course, I typically weigh between 235 and 255, so you may not require this amount, so adjust accordingly!

Comments, questions, ideas, recipes, etc – feel free to let me know!

Personal Trainers in San Antonio – Make Sure You Get the Best

January 25th, 2009

Hey San Antonio,

Are all personal trainers the same? Absolutely not. Some are great at talking the talk. Others may look great but have no idea how to help you change your body. If you invest your hard earned money, are you going to get the results you’re after?

Unfortunately, more times than not, you’re going to be disappointed. Sad, but true. Not only must your personal trainer know what, why and how, but they must also be ready to hold each and every client accountable and also have the client’s best interest in mind.

Many only know one way to train. Think I’m wrong? Go to a gym and watch a trainer with different clients, and you’ll be shocked at how many times they train totally different clients the same. Many won’t answer simple questions – they’ll hide behind “it just works” or something similar. Look, you’re not only paying your personal trainer to get you in shape, but you should be paying them to teach you what to do (why and how as well) so you’re able to do things on your own in the future.

I’ve said it before: I’m a capitalist. I get paid when people are in front of me and I’m training them. But I get a much better return when I take care of clients: when I transform them as quickly as possible and I teach them “how to fish”, so to speak. They don’t hesitate to recommend me to friends and family and that’s where a bulk of my business comes from. They call me all hours of the day and night to ask me whatever they need to know. I sometimes go as far as ordering for them if they’re at a restaurant and they don’t know what to eat – they just hand the waiter the phone and let me take care of them. It’s that level of support that has made my services in such demand.

In the last 2 years, I’ve seen numerous personal training businesses here in San Antonio come and go. It’s a great business and I applaud the trainers that work hard, learn their craft and build a successful business. It’s the ones that are looking to make the quick buck by misleading clients, dragging them on to keep them signing up, put them on starvation diets, have them doing cookie cutter, isolation routines or have them buying a bunch of worthless supplements to keep their revenue numbers high.

My job: CHANGE YOU. Period. Me and my personal trainers take that job very seriously.

My point – don’t settle. Find a personal trainer that not only suits your personality, but is also capable of helping you accomplish your goals. Remember that you aren’t paying for someone to chat with you while you workout and simply count your reps. (As many of you know, I hate rep counters!!!) Demand references. Quiz them. Scare them!

Tomorrow starts a new work week, and Monday is a very popular day to start the workout week. Don’t put it off any longer – you have time to transform your body before spring, so don’t hesitate.

Train hard!

Boot Camp – Best Kick A** Workout in San Antonio

January 25th, 2009

Hey San Antonio,

Tomorrow will start our second week of our fitness boot camp at Personal Fitness Revolution. Thus far, I’ve enjoyed teaching the boot camp (I like high intensity workout sessions) and the trainees have really enjoyed it as well (ok, for the most part).

My personal training studio has now been completely repainted, and I must say that it looks simply amazing. As I mentioned in an earlier post, there is something to the psychology of different colors affecting different emotions, and I feel that the studio is now an even more motivating place to train.

Later this week, I am going to list my recommendations for different services that I have used in the area near my personal training studio. I have compiled a list of the top places to dine (healthy), massage therapists, chiropractors, etc and am looking forward to sharing that here.

It’s time for me to workout, so I’m going to finish now. Make your Sunday great!

What your health club, fitness center, or gym does not want you to know…

January 22nd, 2009

Hey San Antonio,

A couple of years ago, I read an article with that title, and decided to elaborate on each item in my own words. This was originally posted on my other San Antonio Personal Trainer blog, and I wanted to post it here for more people to read.

Let me provide some background information before I delve much further into this topic. If this is your first visit to the San Antonio Personal Trainer Blog, there is no way you know this, but I really do not like the commercial gym environment. I’ve never had any serious run-ins with commercial health clubs, but I know how they work and I know what is by far the most important thing to them, and it isn’t their members’ abs, self-esteem or success – it’s getting as much money out of you, the member, as humanly possible. I nearly become offended when they refer to their employees as personal trainers, when in reality, they’re not much more than glorified salespeople (my 2009 addition: “The Ambercrombie Club”).

That may sound flat-out vicious, but I hope that you take the time to at least read my point-of-view. My personal training business has thrived in San Antonio for several years now, so this isn’t, in any way, a plot to bring me more business. I simply realize that this blog has quite a large number of people that are reading it daily, and I’m fortunate enough to be able to use it as a tool to educate the people of San Antonio about corporate health clubs and gyms, such as Gold’s, Bally’s, Lifetime Fitness, and the other big chain facilities in and around San Antonio.

Many of these items tie-in together, and you’ll probably find their relationships obvious. These ten things were initially released in an article by Reshama Kapadia, but the commentary on each item is my own.

1. “If you’re still here in April, it’ll be a miracle.”

-January is the health club equivalent of the day after Thanksgiving for retail stores – it’s when they come out of the red and they make enough money to run a barely profitable company for the next 11 months. It’s the time when good-intentioned individuals plan on sticking to their New Year’s Resolutions. Don’t think you’re going to get any support from your health club. In fact, they totally expect you to not show up. Oh, make no mistake about it, as you’ll read later, they’re going to get their money out of you no matter what. The best part about it for the health club is that they’re going to do so without you occupying their space or using their facilities! The gyms factor in a 20-30% drop-out rate (by April 1) of clients that sign up in January.

What are some of the main causes of January “drop-outs”? In my opinion, it can be narrowed down to 2 simple reasons: First, the crowds during the first 6 weeks of the year are absolutely insane. Long lines at the treadmills? Check. Hearing the lines “Can I work in with you” or “How many sets do you have left” repeatedly during each and every workout? Check.

I think the biggest reason for lack of success in January sign ups is simple knowledge. The average person doesn’t know what type of results to expect, they don’t know if their doing the right thing to make progress – the health clubs do not provide proper (if any) guidance! I know, I know, you’re thinking “wait a minute, my club has personal trainers.” Well, if you want to call commercial health club “rep-counters” personal trainers, then I stand corrected. However, please reserve judgement until you read item number 4!

2. “Don’t touch anything, this place is crawling with bacteria.”

-About 80% of all infectious disease is transmitted by both direct and indirect contact, says Phillip Tierno, director of clinical microbiology at New York University Medical Center and the author of “The Secret Life of Germs”. It doesn’t take a rocket scientist to understand that gyms and health clubs are breeding ground for everything from athlete’s foot to the flu and worse. Of course, most gyms have the spray bottles for wiping down equipment, but be realistic: does everyone use them? Do people wipe down the bars, grips, and medicine balls after they use them? The Swiss Balls? I don’t think I’ve ever seen anyone at a commercial gym wipe off a Swiss Ball. There are plenty of opportunities for disgusting bacterias. One major San Antonio health club has over 110,000 square foot and I’d guess that it has well over 100,000 members already (maybe many more). Don’t be fooled into believing that they’re equipped to keep it totally sanitized. The environment may look nice and it might be in a nice part of town, but what you cannot see CAN hurt you!

3. “We’re not equipped to handle health emergencies.”

-Here’s an interesting stat: more than one-third of cardiac arrests that happen outside the home and hospitals occur at fitness clubs and sports facilities, says Mary Fran Hazinski, a registered nurse and senior science editor at the American Heart Association.

While effective CPR can buy time, it simply does not reset the heart after cardiac arrest. Chances in revival drop by as much as 10% each minute that passes without proper CPR and defibrilation. Not only do most health clubs not have the proper equipment, their staff isn’t qualified or trained in actually applying simple CPR.

You never know when someone is going to need CPR/AED when they are partaking in an intense exercise program. I’ve been in facilities before when someone stopped breathing and had to perform CPR on that individual (and no, the person was not a client of mine). I personally keep my CPR up-to-date and take hands-on training regularly, and also require my employees to do the same. I’d never want to find out that either I or one of my employees was unprepared in the time of an emergency after the situation occurred. So, find out if your club has the right equipment and also make sure that they have individuals that are qualified to use it.

4. “Our trainers don’t know what they’re doing.”

-Ok, I’ll admit that I wanted to start with this one, but I patiently waited and wrote the previous three items out. You can browse through my blog and find many instances of my discussions about commercial health club personal trainers.

Let me see if I can touch on a few of the problems I have with the commercial health club personal trainers. First, experience and education are not the first things that health clubs look for when they’re hiring their trainers. They want people that can sell retail, nutritional supplements, more personal training packages and larger memberships. The margin of profit that clubs get from a good salesperson is absolutely insane. If a commercial health club personal trainer decided that they weren’t going to badger their clients with selling and just “shut up and train them” they would be FIRED for not meeting their quotas! A good personal trainer has one job: to teach. Their ultimate job is not only to get you in shape, but to teach you enough that over time, you can exercise on your own without dependence on them, NOT to drag you along for as many training sessions as possible. At no time should a trainer view a client as a quota or a sale. Scan through my blog and find my article about commercial gym horror stories. I can’t begin to tell you how many emails and in-person comments I received about that article where people told me they had either experienced or witnessed the same thing. That article was only the tip of the iceberg. I had more reports of negligence by inexperienced commercial gym personal trainers severely injuring their clients.

(I’d be glad to provide any of you with at least 3 former health club employees if you’d like to validate my information…)

Bottom line: interview your trainer, request references, and do your research. Don’t waste your time and money with someone that isn’t a true professional.

5. “We Won’t Let You Quit.”

-At first thought, this may sound like a pretty good deal. In a way, I suppose it could be used as an accountability mechanism. Let’s clarify something right now: when health clubs lock you in to a long term contract OR give you an extensive amount of things that have to be accomplished to terminate the contract, they aren’t doing it to help you stick with your fitness goals. They’re doing it to extract as much money from you as possible.

You have a better chance of getting out of a speeding ticket in Castle Hills or Shavano Park (inside joke for those who live in the local area, they tagged me for a 37 in a 35) before you’ll get out of your Gold’s Gym membership. I know plenty of people that have been told “the check will be mailed to you in 7-10 business days” only to find out months later that they’re still on the hook for membership dues and that the gym has taken the liberties to absolutely destroy their credit rating and turn the “defaulted membership payments” over to a collection agency. If you’re terminating your gym membership, create a paper trail with proof of cancelation. If there is a dispute, notify credit agencies immediately.

6. “Be sure to read the fine print on our contract.”

-Contracts are ugly, period. When you consider that most of us aren’t experts in contract law, the advantage definitely shifts in favor of the health club. Sometimes, you end up with a sales rep that offer you a deal you can’t refuse and you sign up then and there. “Sometimes you end up with a salesperson trying to make quoats that engage in pressure,” says Helen Durkin, head of public policy at International Health, Racquet and Sportsclub Association (IHRSA), and this can lead to “glossing over of details”. One Bally’s 30 day “free” membership offers had a clause where the member had to visit the club at least 12 times over the 30 day period, and they could cancel without penalty. If they didn’t, they were locked into one of Bally’s infamous multi-year contracts with a hefty early termination fee.

My advice: don’t sign anything you don’t understand. Take your time, and read it thoroughly. Take the contract home and highlight any area that you may have a question on.

7. “Our equipment can be downright dangerous.”

-Did you know that fitness clubs DO NOT need a license to operate (aside from city permits such as Certificates of Occupancies and sales permits). And although that there are organizations such as the American College of Sports Medicine that publish industry guidelines, they do not have the teeth of the law – they can only remove that particular club from their membership list.

Health, exercise and fitness-related nutrition is a multi-billion dollar industry with little regulation. Just now has the FDA started cracking down on bogus claims by fat loss supplements, and many of these ridiculous testimonials have been recycled for longer than 10 years. Since so many machines have various different uses, there’s no standardization with most equipment. Take the average health club client that may not have a clue on how to do a glute-ham raise or a hack squat, and the combination could be quite dangerous.

Also, there are no regulations for cleaning and properly maintaining equipment. I’m not going to attempt to tell you that a club would intentionally neglect maintaining their equipment because I’d hope they wouldn’t. But remember that some of these clubs have thousands of members using hundreds of different machines, and to the untrained eye or body, the individual may not even realize that the piece of equipment isn’t functioning properly and could end up with a serious injury. Harold Leon Bostwick is the perfect example: a stack of weights crashed down on the law student while he was doing squats on a machine, severing his spinal cord.

Ask to see maintenance and cleaning logs – all good clubs should have them. If the machine doesn’t move smoothly, sticks, hinges or jerks, avoid it like the plague.

8. “Everything is Negotiable.”

-I realize that not everyone joins their health club during January. The slow times (during the holidays and at the start of summer) are excellent times to take advantage of the best rates and promotions. Keep up with their promotions and write them down. When it comes time to renew your membership, more often than not, they’ll be willing to honor your request if you ask for an offer that they were running months prior. Of course, they’re going to play hardball with you and tell you that the offer is no longer valid. Remember, they want your money – if you walk out the door, they’ll get in touch with you.

One piece of advice that I’ll give you about personal training is this: it’s always cheaper to train with a partner. While I’d strongly advise against training at a commercial facility, you’ll definitely get a better per person/per session rate by bringing a friend, spouse, or other family member. It’s also a great way to stay motivated and accountable!

9. “If your wallet is stolen, it’s not our problem.”

-To most people, a health club is very community-like. Members are very comfortable there, chatting with people that they’ve come to know during the tenure of their membership, relaxing and enjoying their exercise session. Unfortunately, just like any neighborhood, there are people that prey on that feeling of safety and browse the locker rooms for unsecured wallets, gym bags and lockers.

Unfortunately, I’ve known individuals that have returned to their lockers after working out to find their locks cut and valuables missing. While the IHRSA recommends using a lock with a key (as opposed to a combo lock), I recommend not taking valuables (jewelry, purses, credit cards, cash, etc) into the gym with you. Leave it at home or secured in your car.

10. “Go ahead and sue, you’ll NEVER win.”

-Some things are definite: death, taxes, and you’re not going to win a lawsuit against a health club. As a matter of fact, you’re not going to be able to walk in the door of any health club in the city of San Antonio without signing a release of liability that completely absolves the club of any harm, EVEN IF IT IS DUE TO THEIR NEGLIGENCE OR MISINSTRUCTION BY THEIR STAFF MEMBERS.

There are numerous accounts of health clubs being responsible for injury, yet escaping the burden in the court of law. In the case of Michael Stokes (Washington), a judge found that there was a definite defect in the floor of a basketball court that led to severe tendon damage in Stokes’ knee and shoulder, and although the judge ruled that Stokes didn’t realize he was even signing such a release, a subsequent court of appeals upheld the waiver and dismissed the case. In cases of gross negligence, the club will more than likely hold some liability, but understand that the bar has been set high.

In basic English, know that you are responsible for your own health when you’re in a health club or fitness center, and make safety priority one.

I hope that you’ve found this information interesting and you now understand what the corporate gyms aren’t telling you. Believe it or not, I don’t even consider those clubs the competition to Personal Fitness Revolution. We realize that we can count on their mistreatment of members, and how impressed they are when they come to visit us.

Time to workout? Who has it?

Hey San Antonio,

Definitely the biggest reason that people do not workout is, simply put: time. Who has it? Have you ever not made time to eat? Not made time to stop and get gas? Not made to sleep? Well, fitness MUST become that type of priority to you. Everyone has the same 24 hours per day, and for the most part, we have to bust our tails to do things that we enjoy. We like to work hard, love to spend time with our kids and loved ones and like to stay ahead at work.

You will NEVER find time. Trust me – right now, I train roughly 12-14 hours per day (it’s 1:34 right now and I’ve been here since 5:30am, and still have more clients today). I have a son. I am my own manager, marketing director, accountant, I cook, I clean, and have other responsibilities. But I make the time to exercise, and for me, it’s 3-5 hours per week. That’s it – 3-5 hours for the entire week.

I challenge you to stop looking for time and to MAKE time to become a better you. You WILL respond to exercise: you’ll become more alert, more aware, more productive. You’ll lose weight. You WILL look and feel better. You’ll live longer and have a better quality of life, which gives you more time to enjoy your children and significant other.

The choice is yours… Will you (not can you) make time?

New studio look and other personal trainer thoughts…

January 20th, 2009

Hey San Antonio,

Me and Dan have spent a lot of time giving our personal training studio a total body makeover, and it is almost complete – we’ve rearranged, added things, subtracted things and have had the place painted. I’ll be posting updated pics and video later, but it looks amazing!

The circuit, plyometric, kettlebell, functional training, cardio fitness boot camp is in full swing – MWF at 5:30am and M-F at 4pm. You can do whatever class you want, and for the really daring, you can do all 8 classes per week (I dare you)… One of the attendees of the first boot camp summed up her condition to me last night: “Boyd, my legs, arms, abs, chest and back are on fire, but in a good way…” I love the “in a good way” comment when someone tells me they’re sore!

It’s time for my post-workout nutrition. I’ve found that using a combination of low glycemic carbs (oats) and moderate gi carbs (a banana) with whey protein isolate, followed by a low glycemic carb + lean protein meal (lean ground beef + whole grain rice) 90-120 minutes after that works great for me to begin recovery while stabilizing blood sugar and keeping me energetic. I’m often asked about the ideal post-workout shake and it is really person specific – I want them to keep their energy sustained (no crash) and do the most to increase recovery capabilities with food timing and proper supplementation.

If you haven’t checked out my main personal training website, go now: San Antonio Personal Trainer Boyd Myers. It’s loaded with articles that I’ve written, my blog, nutrition tips and other fitness related information.

You’ll get a good look at my approach. It’s my job to get people in shape, help them create a lifestyle that will KEEP them in shape, make them feel better and perform better in daily life, no matter what they’re lifestyle is. I’m an intense person, and I’m brutally honest about the fact that I’m not a big fan of how most personal trainers work. I believe in pushing a client – not to unreasonable expectations, but to a point at which their body will be force to adjust and train. I’m tired of bs myths and nonsense that personal trainers tend to pass off as fact, and I strive to help clients not become paralyzed by analysis and to help them cut through the garbage for the real meat of what will help them change their bodies. We aren’t into keeping clients “SOLD” like Lifetime or Gold’s – we HAVE NO QUOTAS. We aren’t pushing bs supplements to get our bottom line up and we aren’t jumping on the latest fads in diet and exercise. We employ science and real life experience to get the most for our clients. Simply put, we are the best at what we do – we are full time fitness professionals, and not those young “Ambercrombie” kids you see at Gold’s Gym that were working at La Cantera last week…

Time to eat – workout hard every time!
